Older engines used port injection, which means fuel was sprayed into the intake manifold just before it entered the cylinder. That fuel spray also washed over the intake valves on every cycle, which kept them relatively clean.
Direct injection changed that. In a TSI engine, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, bypassing the intake valves entirely. That sounds like a refinement, and in terms of efficiency and power delivery it is, but the trade-off is that nothing is cleaning those intake valves anymore. Oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system gets pulled into the intake and coats the valves over time, and without fuel washing over them on every cycle, that residue builds up into thick carbon deposits.
This is not a VW-specific defect. It's a characteristic of direct injection engines across brands. But VW's TSI engines are extremely common in Edmonton, and the way most Edmonton drivers use their vehicles makes the problem develop faster than it would under other conditions.

Chemical cleaning sprays are available as a less invasive option and work reasonably well on light deposits. They won't touch heavy buildup, but for a vehicle that's been serviced proactively, a chemical clean can extend the interval between walnut blasting services.
Catch cans are a preventive measure. Installed in the crankcase ventilation system, they trap oil vapour before it reaches the intake, which slows deposit formation. They don't stop it completely, but they're a worthwhile addition for Edmonton drivers who put serious city kilometres on their VW.
