xDrive is BMW's permanent all-wheel drive system, and it's more complex than most drivers realize. Unlike a basic AWD setup, xDrive
continuously distributes torque between the front and rear axles using a transfer case, an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, and
a series of differentials that all work together in real time. Each of those components has its own fluid, its own wear characteristics, and
its own service interval.
The problem is that dealership service advisors often follow a simplified maintenance schedule. Oil changes, brake pads, cabin filters. Unless a warning light appears or a customer asks specifically, the xDrive drivetrain components tend to get passed over. For Edmonton drivers covering highway kilometres, logging time on gravel roads, or dealing with winter conditions, that gap in service adds up.
The transfer case is the heart of the xDrive setup. It sits between the transmission and the front and rear axles and manages how power is split. In most xDrive vehicles, the system defaults to a rear-biased split but can push up to 100 percent of torque forward when slip is detected.
The front differential distributes that power across the front wheels, while the rear differential handles the same job at the back. In higher-spec models, you'll find an active rear differential that can vary torque between the rear wheels independently, which gives the car much of its handling precision.
All three units rely on gear oil to reduce friction and carry heat away from the internal components. When that oil degrades or gets contaminated, wear accelerates quickly. BMW originally marketed certain drivetrain fluids as "lifetime fill," meaning no change was required for the life of the vehicle. That designation has caused a lot of expensive repairs over the years.

Temperature extremes, water intrusion from spring roads, and high-load driving all degrade drivetrain fluid faster than the spec assumes. xDrive doesn't operate in isolation. It works in constant communication with BMW's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and the ABS system. The DSC monitors wheel speed, steering angle, yaw rate, and lateral acceleration, then uses that data to adjust torque distribution through the xDrive system in real time.
That integration is part of what makes these cars so capable. It also means a fault in one system can generate misleading codes in another. A wheel speed sensor issue might produce an xDrive fault. A transfer case problem might trigger a DSC warning. Diagnosing these vehicles accurately requires BMW-specific diagnostic tools and a technician who understands how the systems interact.
Generic scan tools read generic codes. A BMW repair specialist with the right equipment can read the actual fault data, trace it to the correct system, and avoid replacing parts that don't need replacing.
Some xDrive variants are more forgiving than others as the kilometres accumulate. The ATC 35L and ATC 400 transfer cases, found in many X3, X5, and 3 Series xDrive models, have known wear tendencies when fluid service has been delayed. The multi-plate clutch pack inside these units can develop slippage, which shows up as vibration under acceleration, hesitation when switching from forward to reverse, or a grinding sensation at low speed.
X5 models with the ATC 700 transfer case are generally more robust, but they're not immune. High-mileage E70 and F15 X5s with deferred fluid service regularly come in with transfer case wear that could have been avoided.
